WORDS OF WISDOM – Bryce Courtenay

This week’s “Words of Wisdom” come from best-selling Australian author, Bryce Courtenay.

“Wisdom… is about being decent. …If you can be generous and nice rather than a son-of-a-bitch, it works better for you in the end… If you can be pleasant and nice -you’re going to be conned, absolutely, for sure – in the long run, over seventy-five years, it’s a better journey and in the end you win more.”

“In hard fact you actually win more: you win more friends, you win more opportunities, you win more life, you win more joy, you win more character.”

“It’s a very curious thing: the world is predicated on the basis: ‘watch that bloke, he’s very suss… and he could be taking you.’ I’ve always said, ‘Take me. Let’s have a look at what it’s all about’.”*

What an inspiring way of looking at life. I live with a Pollyanna like Bryce Courtenany, and can attest to the life-affirming power of always looking for the best in people. Would that I could be so good, but then I was brought up with the saying “If you catch a weasel sleeping you can piss in its ear.” Obscure, no? 😉 Seriously, I actually like people and would far rather go through life being disappointed occasionally than assume that everyone’s out to get me.

  1. Here, here. Je suis Polyanna aussi.

You are also only the second person I have ever come across who uses the ‘weasel’ analogy! Extraordinary.
