A life lived in the public eye

Sixties fashion icon, Twiggy is now 60 herself. Speaking in September’s issue of Woman and Home, she has this to say about ageing:

“Ageing is hard, but it’s no good getting depressed about it because it’s inevitable… Being young isn’t about age, it’s about being a free spirit. You can meet someone of 20 who’s boring and old, or you can meet someone of 70 who’s youthful and exciting.”

Twiggy - definitely not boring or old

Since 2005, Twiggy has been one of the “Faces” of Marks and Spencer. Originally, she says they tended to put her in the cardigans: “I’ve accepted the fact that some clothes have to go as you get older. I haven’t worn a mini-skirt for 30-odd years.”

Project50 is, of course, essentially about growing older, but the idea is to celebrate the new opportunities that arise as a result of maturity and the natural progression of our lives. Twiggy has recently launched a new range of bedlinen and appears regularly as a guest judge on America’s Next Top Model as well as continuing to work for Marks and Spencer.

“I am proud of being 60, but I don’t want to talk about it every day,” she says.

And why would she talk about it when she is so busy living it? At 60 Twiggy is an inspiration to those of us who have mixed feelings about turning 50. And she looks great, doesn’t she?
