Tracks of my Years – 1964

Do you remember the first single you ever owned? My dad bought me this when I was three years old. He used to sing it to me and for many years, I thought that Freddie Garrity was a member of my family.

Fast forward 40 years and Freddie was in panto at the Derngate theatre. I have long considered it my duty to embarrass my children whenever possible. and I am pleased to say that I excelled myself that day as I produced my single and sent it backstage for an autograph…

  1. mine was two little boys …

  2. Mine was Franky Lane – the wild Goose – 78 rpm black vinyl and very brittle – gone of course
But I still have the first 45 rpm – Sons of the Pioneers – Cool Water – flip side, Chant of the Wanderer

  3. We had an LP of ‘Oliver in the Overworld’, sung by Freddy Garrity and my sister and I can still sing every word of every line and every song.

The first single that was actually mine (bought for me by my sisters) was David Bowie’s ‘The Laughing Gnome’.

The first single I bought with my own money was ‘White Man at Hammersmith Palais’ by The Clash.

  4. Oh WH, you really were too cool for school. I was so unsophisticated then (then?) As was Gary! Do you still have the record player oldfool?
