Tracks of my Years – MIssissippi John Hurt

In 2007 Son no.2 introduced me to the Delta Blues. I was familiar with some of the tracks, I just didn’t know what it was I was listening to. We visited Mississippi John Hurt’s grave in Avalon and Dan left a guitar pick by the headstone. Art Browning, keeper of the restored sharecropper’s shack that was Hurt’s home, gave Dan a metal slide as a souvenir, then took him home to let him shoot his guns, the idea that a 16 year old boy had never been shooting being a shocking one to Art.

It was part of one the happiest days of my life to date: a golden day that I will never forget. Dan sang and played this song as we sat with a Bud on the banks of the Tallahatchie River that evening, watching the golden light fade over the muddy waters. It will always remind me of that day, part of a trip that set Dan on the path he’s now travelling. I hope you enjoy it.
