Driving on the left

I’ve turned into “Disgusted from Northamptonshire”! How? I actually just fired off an email to Sky News. Really, I did. (Could this be a further sign of middle age?)

What caused this transformation? The assertion by News anchor, Eamonn Holmes backed up by his sports reporter, Jacqui Beltrao, that it’s perfectly acceptable to drive in the middle lane of the motorway “so long as it’s not at 60 miles an hour”. What?

Lazy, arrogant middle lane hoggers drive me insane. Why should other drivers have to manoeuvre around them just because they are too lazy to turn the steering wheel?

Just for the record, here’s an excerpt from the Highway Code:

264 You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.

Is that good enough for Eamonn and Jacquie? Oh no, newsreader, Charlotte was shouted down by Jacquie with the remark “just because it’s in a book, you don’t have to do it.”

A Book? Saints preserve us, even our news programmes have dumbed down to such an extent that it seems to be ok to dismiss the law if it doesn’t suit the individual. Ironically, the fact that it was on the TV will be enough for thousands to think it’s true.

The rules of the road are non-negotiable. If you can’t handle driving in the inside lane unless overtaking, get off the motorway.

  1. Well done, co ‘Motorway Crusader’. I can curse with a free will now.

  2. I don’t remember writing this post and yet…. and yet….
I love driving and it’s completely spoiled for me by other drivers like the middle lane hoggers. Hanging’s too good for them etc etc
