Letter to my Beleaguered Family

A time for reflection...

Dear ones,

Like so many people in these troubled months, we are all having a hard time at the moment. From serious health issues to money worries, joblessness and various emotional crises, we’re all feeling a bit battered, whether those things are happening to us, or we’re just standing helplessly on the sidelines trying to be a support.

One of you posted on Facebook “Can the universe throw my family a bone already?”

Sweetheart, the “bone” we were thrown is to belong to each other. We still find things to smile about and laugh together every time we meet.

It’s hard to accept that there are people in the world who seem to sail blithely through life without a thought for the impact their actions have on others, that people you have loved and have loved you can seek to hurt you, but it isn’t for us to do Karma’s work. It was you who showed me the words of Confucious: “before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”

Take heed. The best form of revenge is to live life well and be happy.

I am so proud of you all: for your fortitude, your generosity, your stubborn determination to do the right thing, without thought of the cost to your peace of mind. Sometimes, you can’t know what “the right thing” is until the years pass and the consequences unfold. You can only resolve to continue to examine your conscience, focus on your goals and not allow yourself to be distracted by the issues and agendas of those who are fighting against you. Conversely, sometimes you have to accept that there is nothing you can do, and move on. Helpless rage never helped anybody.

What I really want to say to you all is, hang in there – this too shall pass. And whilst essentially we are all alone, no man is an island – we will always have each other. Together we stand. Chin up: Illegitimi non carborundum. x
