Joe Buissink Rocks!

Every once in a while, if we are lucky, we get to meet our heroes. It’s only a matter of weeks since I discovered the work of Beverly Hills Photographer, Joe Buissink, but having been moved to tears by his beautiful, haunting images, I jumped at the chance of hearing him speak at the Watford Hilton yesterday.

Joe Buissink and me

Joe did not disappoint. Now 60, he started in photography when only a little younger than me, which, in itself, was encouraging! We’ve talked in previous posts about the responsibility we all have to pass on our knowledge, passion and experience to the younger generation. There weren’t many youngsters at yesterday’s seminar, but some of us were new to the profession and Joe was so generous with his time, his enthusiasm and his knowledge he is a genuine ambassador for the industry and a thoroughly decent human being.

As well as talking us through the thought processes and technical aspects required to capture his sought-after images, Joe shared the work he does for the charity, Autism Heroes. He also shared, generously and humbly, his own personal story, which informs the images he produces. Joe sees and shoots “from the heart” – he calls himself a “seeker of truth” and his honest, tender and timeless images are, I believe, priceless, to be treasured by their subjects for generations.

Joe is the embodiment of the kind of photographer I want to be. He makes me want to rise above the mundane, to improve my craftsmanship and, most of all, to open my heart. That is why I count him as one of my heroes. If you love photography as an art form, I urge you to spend an hour with Joe’s wonderful portfolio. You won’t be disappointed and I guarantee you’ll feel uplifted. My Monday morning gift to you 😉 xx
