Tracks of my Years – Nina Simone

This is a track very dear to my heart. Sometimes I’ve wanted to adopt it as a theme tune, but that would, I feel, be a little disrespectful to the Civil Rights movement 😉

Anyway, today’s post isn’t about me: it’s for anyone who dares to raise their head above the parapet to make themselves heard and finds bullets coming at them. It’s for the Tall Poppies who dare to dream big, for those with vision, imagination and the balls to make things happen.

Being misunderstood is, sadly, part of the deal. You just have to concentrate on the majority who get it, not the vocal minority whose jealousy or insecurity, or extra small willy makes them expend their energy on criticism. And you have to protect yourself from the energy-sappers who mistake your friendliness for an offer to be their mum/dad. The world needs chiefs as well as indians – keep your eyes on the dream and don’t let being misunderstood knock you, even for a minute. For everyone who is working thanklessly to turn a big dream into something solid – This is for YOU xxx

  1. I’ve never heard her version of this song – she has such an amazing, emotional voice doesn’t she.

Keep your head boldly above the parapet my dear, so we can all smile at you! xx
