Swinging Doors

The funny thing about an empty nest is that just as you get used to the space and the quiet, someone will fly back, fill the house with noise and energy and music, then fly back out of the door leaving a flurry of feathers settling on the hall carpet in their wake.

I think that’s what I find hard about the kids growing up and leaving home – I often feel as if life is in limbo. They certainly seem to assume that I am only animated in their presence. Like the old debate about whether a tree actually falls down if the act isn’t witnessed (or something bizarre like that!) the concept that I might have a life beyond being their mother seems to be a difficult one for them to grasp. “Letting go” cuts both ways – just as I have a responsibility to detach from them and allow them to fly, so they have to release me too. And not be so surprised to find that I’m not actually sitting by the phone waiting for a call out of the blue asking to be picked up from the station.

Anyway, Son no.2, Dan, is gradually building his profile as a composer, working on TV ads and writing bespoke music for the odd copyright-conscious photographer. He’s also been helping out a friend, up and coming singer-songwriter, Billy Lockett, by producing his demo disks and Cellar Session recordings. That means he’s been dividing his time between his base in Guildford, Billy’s house in Northampton and home. The two plan to write together, and I’m looking forward to hearing the results of that collaboration. Meanwhile, Dan has stepped in to perform with Billy on his upcoming UK tour – 4 weeks in the back of a tour van qualifies him as a rolling stone, I reckon. Check out their cover below.
