I caught the last train home last night…

…well, the penultimate one, to be exact. But it was after midnight. I didn’t get to bed until 2am – shock! Why? Because I went to London to see Billy Lockett play at the Bedford in Balham as part of his UK tour and, I have to say, what started off as motherly duty (Dan is backing him on guitar) turned into genuine pleasure the minute they started to play.

I think I was expecting a set-full of ballads (which is what I have to confess, I thought indie-folk was!) and what I got was energy, humour, talent and, despite the venue’s sound production issues, some pretty tight musicianship. If you like artists like Mumford and Sons and Frank Turner, you’ll love Billy Lockett.

The last time I heard Billy sing live he was a 17 year old wannabe, still in school. There was something different about him even then, but now, 3 years later he’s put in his time, written some seriously good tunes and is teetering on the cusp of stardom. Picked up by “BBC Introducing”, Billy’s single Balance can be bought on iTunes for the princely sum of 79p. “Don’t Wait Up” has just been released.

If you are on Facebook then please hop over to Billy’s page and “like” it.

I wrote about Billy when I posted a You Tube video of Hold on Hope and just down the page here is the boys’ cover version of Pumped up Kicks  Both tracks are on the live playlist. The  remaining dates of the tour are on there, including Leicester, Barnsley, Manchester, Hull, Glasgow, Milton Keynes and Northampton. and I urge you to go along if you can and support them – just be prepared to stay up late!
