Family Life

I’m typing this from my sofa on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Husband of my heart has popped out to buy milk for a cup of tea and some cake, (I hope!). My study has been commandeered by son no 2 who is busy producing a new track he’s co-written with Billy Lockett. I can hear the same snippet of the same song being played over and over again as he makes the track richer by adding strings, drums, layer by layer.

Half an hour ago the three of us were out walking in the lush green fields nearby. We were rained on once but, as Billy Connolly would say, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing. Most of the time, the sun shone as we variously strolled and chatted or marched in companionable silence to a soundtrack of birdsong. We came together, now we’ve moved apart to each do our own thing. Later, we’ll come together again to sit round the table for dinner which Dan will cook, it being Father’s Day.

Son no 1 and two of our grandsons Skyped this morning. Daughter No1 rang before her shift at the museum. Daughter no2 no doubt will call when she finishes work at the pub. According to her Facebook status update, she has another tattoo, so that will no doubt form part of her conversation with her dad.

Family life changes as the children grow up and leave home, but it’s always there to be enjoyed by whichever one might drift home. I feel a quiet inner peace today, which I will savour. I think what I’m trying to say is that, as a society, we can spend too much time  deciding what constitutes happiness, or functionality when it comes to families. Like so many things, it’s up to each of us to find a way to be together that suits us.

My tea and cake have now arrived – my life is complete! I’ll leave you with these words of wisdom from the late Steve Jobs – food for thought!
