The Saturday Interview 30 – Kim & Roger

Kim’s husband, Roger, joins us in the garden of their family home. Taking a break from work in his home office, he’s seeking sunshine and a little company.

“We don’t have any big plans really, do we?” he says, turning to his wife when we explain the purpose of the interview. “Now we’ve reached out fifties we can relax… go with the flow. Just enjoy life.”

Roger is looking forward to retirement and Kim is already enjoying a bit more balance in her life now that their two daughters are grown.

“I work three days a week as a beauty advisor, which gives me time to do the things that I want to do.”

Things like photography, which is fast becoming a passion, and motor sports, which they both enjoy. Kim has just returned from a weekend away with a girlfriend, Youth Hostelling in the Lake District, something she would never have considered when the girls were small.

“I love my job,” she tells me. “I’m not selling a product, but a feeling. There’s nothing better than making someone feel good.”

Sitting in their pretty, neat garden, sipping tea and munching biscuits, there is a palpable feeling of contentment in the air. In many ways, Kim and Roger have lived a traditional life, centred around work and family, and they have earned this sense of ease. They don’t yearn for fireworks, rather the warm, consistent glow of the bonfire as they move into this new phase in their lives. I loved spending some time with them before Kim and I went off to play with our cameras. Hm – maybe that’s what turning 50 is all about – having time to play!

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me, guys, and I wish you all the very best.
