The Saturday Interview 35 – Sue

Jo Blackwell PhotographyFormer Head Teacher, Sue, has embraced her fifties with an enviable energy and fervour.

I meet with her in her cosy home in the Northamptonshire countryside at a difficult time, shortly after a family bereavement, and she is still reeling.

“I feel I want some quiet time to myself,” she confesses. I recognise that slightly dazed, unreal feeling and sympathise.

Not that her joi de vivre has entirely disappeared – there is laughter as well as contemplation as we talk. Still working as a schools inspector, Sue nevertheless finds time to do those things she really enjoys, such as needlecraft and working with stained glass.

We decide that this is how we will picture her: working with her tools in a spare bedroom, completely and happily absorbed. This, I suspect, is where she feels most at peace and, judging by the beautiful work she produces, the direction in which she will continue to travel in her fifties and beyond.
